Die Klappentexterin und ich werden am Donnerstag der diesjährigen Re:publica einen Workshop zu Review-Blogs und Lyrikseiten leiten. Mehr Infos darüber stellt Euch freundlicherweise die Mädchenmannschaft zur Verfügung: Girls Can Netzpoesie! Ich bin ja immer noch völlig geplättet von der Masse an Speakern und Vorträgen dieses Jahr - Wahnsinn. Katrin Rönicke, die privat hier und neu auch für das Projekt Frau Lila bloggt, hat einen lesenswerten Artikel geschrieben: Wir sind das Netz. Er handelt von Frauen im Netz, beinhaltet aber nicht nur bekannte Fakten zum Thema, sondern gibt auch den ein- oder anderen Denkanstoß. Toll ist, dass nicht nur die Mädchenmannschaft und Girls Can Blog Erwähnung finden, sondern auch die Facebook-Gruppe Girls On Web Society, die sich nächste Woche im Rahmen der Re:publica 2011 mal wieder "in echt" treffen wird. Darüber hinaus ist schön, dass Der Freitag 'Frauen im Netz' gleich zum Wochenthema ernannt hat und weitere Artikel, die sich z.B. mit Fragen des Vorhandenseins von Autorinnen in der Wikipedia befassen, mit in den Ring wirft. (Wer schon eine Weile hier mitliest, könnte sich an diesen GCB-Post vom letzten November erinnern.)

In den Kommentaren zu Katrins Artikel vermisst Michael B. auf GCB  frauengeführte Blogs zu "Politik, Informatik und Computerspielen". Zu letzteren habe ich zwar tatsächlich bisher leider noch keinen im Angebot, für Politik und Informatik kann ich aber durchaus Empfehlungen abgeben: Kathrin (IT), Gudrun (beides), Melanie (IT), Margaret (Politik), Cathrin (vor allem Politik in Vietnam), Eva (Politik), Katharina (Politik und USA) oder, wenn der Herr arabisch spricht, auch Reem (Politik) - um nur einige zu nennen. Wie Ihr wisst, sind weitere Vorschläge in allen Kategorien  jederzeit willkommen!

Das nächste Bloggerinnen-Portrait ist übrigens in Arbeit, leider komme ich derzeit nicht wirklich zu was. Mit der Bitte um etwas Geduld verabschiede ich mich jetzt in den Feierabend!

MTV produced a documentary on Facebook called The Diary of Facebook. It's around 30 minutes long and provides an insight into the most chaotic office space on earth (<- just guessing!). Source.

Carmen wrote an interesting article on models and the history of modeling for austrianfashion.net. More on modeling and how the imitation of modeling poses ruins beautifies our party pictures has Blica.

More fashion: Blica also regrets the closing down of Raffaela's blog and complains about the declining quality of fashion blogs.

Amongst others, Mara has been nominated for the Superblogs 2011 Award. Until yesterday, people could suggest their favorite blogs in ten different categories, and now voting is open until 7 April. Unfortunately, this has only come to my attention today, otherwise I would have of course informed you about this earlier.

Erin compiled a few helpful tips for uncluttering your schedule. These are greatly appreciated, as trying to keep your obligations to a minimum can be tough. In another helpful post, she advises you on how to keep your to do list neat and tidy. German GCB readers might remember my Listen post of last February. 

Lachsbroetchen has discovered Instagram and is posting pretty pictures of her favorite city: Hamburg, Germany.

World Water Day 2011

Today is World Water Day. This year's focus topic is Water and Urbanization. Not only in light of current fears of radioactivity entering Tokio's water pipes, the topic couldn't be more prevailing. If you're a blogger, you might also want to highlight 15 October in your calendar: Blog Action Day. Their website is currently down so here's a link to their outdated Twitter. Not the smartest strategy for a social media campaign, huh? Last year's Blog Action Day topic was water, too.

For German Readers: Och, nö!

Leider, leider: Raffaela verabschiedet sich von ihrem tollen Blog. Warum, steht ziemlich lang und herzzerreißend hier. Im Prinzip findet sie, dass Bloggen - ganz besonders in der Modesparte - zu einem  Affenzirkus verkommen ist, in dem Persönlichkeiten zwischen all den Product Placements kaum noch eine Rolle spielen; was vielen Macherinnen so lange Banane ist, wie sie sich mit Sektgläsern auf Shop-Eröffungen profilieren können. Aus ähnlichen Gründen, allerdings die Yoga-Szene betreffend, hat auch Linda aus den Vereinigten Staaten neulich ihr Blog aufgegeben. Ihr wütender Abschiedspost strotzt (sehr un-Yogi-like) nur so von Flüchen. Wirklich schade, ich werde die beiden vermissen!

Diane discusses The Ups and Downs of Yoga. This is an interesting read for Non-Yogis, too, because she basically ponders the question of how much help is too much help and judgement of people in general. (Be warned: I've become a pretty diligent yoga student myself lately and might be writing about all things related more often now.)

Ever wondered how to credit properly? Design*Sponge has the answer and a matching image (see to the right, click to enlarge).

In an adorable post, Ninia LaGrande wonders whatever happened to her childhood dream of becoming a dreadlocked jewelry vendor in Tuscany: Stopp! Ich möchte hier raus.

And then there's Luciana Schmidt, who has been unhappy with people advertising their own blogs in her comment section. While, on the one hand, I can understand her feeling of being abused, on the other it seems a little weird to read such a statement from someone whose own blog is pretty much all about advertising. Either way, she offers the possibility of adding your own blog to a long link list below her original post, which is nice. So far, she's already collected over 100 mostly German fashion and beauty blogs.

Zu diesem Thema hat Spiegel Online unter anderem die Kunstlehrerin Janina Scheidmann interviewt. Erst vor drei Tagen hat sie mit einer ihrer Klassen Werke des großartigen amerikanischen Künstlers Cy Twombly betrachtet. Leider scheint den Kids ihr Blog aber eher schnuppe zu sein: "Die fanden das drei Minuten interessant, dann nicht mehr." Woran könnte das liegen, was meint Ihr? Macht bloggen der Jugend etwa zu viel Arbeit - mit all der Rechtschreibung und dem Kram? ;)

Finally, all speakers of this year's re:publica have been announced, and the is long and interesting. Scrolling through it, you will see the current who is who of the blogosphere and likely recognize a few familiar faces previously introduced on GCB: Simone Finkenwirth, Nadine Lantzsch, Magda Albrecht, Helga Hansen, and Kathrin Ganz.

"I’m not moving to Paris to be a housewife! Or, yes, I am!"

Today I found a two week old interview with Salma Hayek  at the New York Times. It's entitled "The Real Housewife of Paris". An extensive and technically well-written portrait that, probably accidentally, crushes every single one of Salma's likeable character traits. It starts with the title shot: Salma refuses to be photographed smoking cigarettes, but agrees to have a lit match dangling from her mouth - confusing.

In spite of  numerous professional achievements that include the production of hit TV-series Ugly Betty, an Oscar nomination and UNICEF activism, the article continues to list the "by far most significant roles in her life" as being a cook to a filthy-rich husband demanding a three-course meal every night, and a driver (albeit a loving one) to her 3-year-old daughter. Yet instead of going into more detail on the causes of her social work, Salma proudly points out that while she could easily hire a stylist to assist her in picking free and custom-fit designer clothes for the day, she much rather takes the risk of mismatching herself: "I want [my husband] to be proud of me and not think, The stylist did a good job. That’s not sexy!”

According to the article, Salma prefers starring in independent European movie productions to Hollywood box-office hits now mainly because they are being shot closer to her family's estate in Paris. And if she doesn't feel like working any given day, she spontaneously goes on strike and just tells everyone to "deal with it". Frequent racist remarks she has been subjected to as a Mexican woman in her work environment ostensibly never hurt her: "Many times the idiots are in power. What are you gonna do?" Partying with corrupt Russian oligarchs sounds like mighty good distraction!

I used to confuse Salma Hayek with Penélope Cruz, who acted in many more memorable films than Salma did, Volver, for example, and who says smart stuff like "Ego is a lion we have to keep under control". After reading the above mentioned article, I am confident this mix-up won't happen again.

Der Name Luciana Schmidt fiel hier schon eine Weile nicht: Sie war vor fast genau einem Jahr die erste Bloggerin, die auf GIRLS CAN BLOG porträtiert wurde. Heute hat sie auf ihrem etwas anderen Modeblog Lu zieht an.  aber über ein interessantes Gewinnspiel von Mangoblüte berichtet, das ich Euch nicht vorenthalten möchte: Es gibt eine Uhr, eine teure Tasche, ein Armband, einen Nagellack, und ein Kochbuch abzustauben, alles zusammen im Wert von ca. 500€ - am besten, Ihr schaut Euch das selbst mal an... Ich habe jedenfalls gaaaanz ausnahmsweise mal bei sowas mitgemacht. ;)

For German Readers: Annina @zdflogin

Der ZDFinfokanal bat Hauptgast Steffen Bilger von der CDU, Wahlwissenschaftler Thorsten Faas, Mitinitiator des offenen Briefes der DoktorandINNen Hannes Klöpper und mich, uns zur Causa Guttenberg zu äußern. Haben wir gern gemacht, das Ergebnis ist hier zu sehen. (Für die Vielbeschäftigten unter Euch gibt es auch eine sehr kurze Kurzfassung.)

Das Diskutieren hat großen Spaß gemacht, und ich glaube, wir hätten alle am liebsten noch mehr zu unseren jeweiligen Positionen gesagt. Leider bot das saucoole, internetlastige Format der Sendung Log In dafür keine Zeit. Es war aber auch sehr spannend zu hören, was das Publikum zu der Angelegenheit zu sagen hatte, live im Studio und zugeschaltet via Twitter. 

Wer Lust bekommen hat, nächste Woche zum Thema Türkisch First? - Wie viel "Deutsch" braucht die Integration? mitzudiskutieren: Die Sendung wird jeweils mittwochs ab 21:45 Uhr live gestreamt und ihr Hashtag lautet #zdflogin.

For German Readers: Am Kiosk... NOT!

Vor etwa einer Woche hat Ninia LaGrande nach geschätzten fünfzehn Jahren mal wieder eine Bravo Girl in die Hand bekommen -  zum Glück, denn sie lässt uns an ihrer Entdeckung teilhaben.

Menschen, die eine ähnliche Magazinkarriere hinter sich haben wie Ninia und ich [bei mir Wendy -> Spick -> Bravo -> Bravo Girl -> Young Miss -> die alte (!) Joy -> Elle und/ oder Vogue -> Marie Claire UK -> The Face], kriegen heutzutage nämlich Augenbluten ob all der gutgemeinten Ratschläge, mit denen Frauenzeitschriften uns zu Angepasstheit und dem Konsum diverser clever platzierter Güter animieren wollen. Wenn man sich, wie ich, praktisch gar nicht mehr am Kiosk aufhält, weil Zeitungen und Zeitschriften, die man mag, abonniert in den Briefkasten flattern, und  man alles andere, das einen publizistisch interessiert, früher oder später ohnehin online findet, blendet man verunsichernde Schleichwerbung in Magazinform im Alltag einfach aus. 

Umso erstaunter war ich, in der Märzausgabe der im Flugzeug kostenlos verteilten Glamour ein siebenseitiges Special zum Thema Feminismus zu entdecken, das, oh Freude, ganz unverhohlen die Vorteile der Frauenquote darlegt. Zwischen Ist es okay, für die Hochzeit von Freunden Stripper mit Schleier zu engagieren?, einer Frage, die mit meiner Lebenswelt etwa so wenig zu tun hat wie Crystal Meth, und einem Artikel über Blake Mycoskie, den Gründer des als "Hilfsprojekt" bezeichneten Unternehmens TOMS shoes - aber immerhin!

While my favorite GCB bag, Oliver and I were riding a basket sledge in Funchal many things happened in the rest of the world:

Susanne Klingner and Barabara Streidl of the Mädchenmannschaft gave a radio talk on men-friendly feminism and the necessity of a women's quota in German corporations. Such a quota has been debated here for a couple of weeks now, but has been dismissed by politicians for no comprehensible reason: Surely, there must be female candidates with equal professional and personal qualifications for executive positions - why should they not be allocated 40% of senior job posts? Susanne and Barbara's link recommendations: Antje Schrupp and GCB - many thanks!

Tasya van Ree, the woman I named my favorite GCB bag Tasya after (yes, the one pictured above), has started a T-shirt line named Saint vs. Sinner. The first shirt is white with a print of two topless female fire fighters kissing, and it's available for $25.

Also, the new Missy Magazine came out last week: Complete with a music CD featuring 11 cool tracks by international artists and a brief article on female comic artists by myself. Available for the next three months at your favorite newspaper kiosk for around 6€ (other selling points here) or online via subscription. Whoever can't get a hold of a copy should listen into the songs on the CD nevertheless - they're good! Try Jeannel's They Come and Change it All for a start.

"Gartenmädchen" of Mauerblumen is probably the most patient girl I have ever met. Due to my mistake, her filled-in questionnaire sat in my inbox for a full six months before I even noticed it was there!
What a shame that was you will notice as soon as you follow the jump to read an interview on gardening in urban areas, planting and harvesting your own veggies, and on why imitating other blogs when starting your own probably won't do much good.

Anna Niestroj hat Anfang des Monats eine Pro und Contra-Liste über die Stadt Zürich angelegt. Voller Stereotypen, aber für mich als Exilzürcherin super spannend! Überhaupt bin ich ja eine große Freundin von Listen - sie helfen enorm bei der Organisation (z.B. Doodle oder Piratepad), beim Beschenktwerden (z.B. die Wunschzettel auf Amazon) und beim Freunde finden (auf Facebook oder auch Listography). Auch Google Tasks ist für die schnelle Notiz zwischendurch zu empfehlen. Bei so viel Auswahl heisst es nur noch: Überblick behalten! Am besten also gleich eine Liste anlegen, auf der steht, auf welcher Liste jetzt was steht... ;)
