After a long wait, please let me introduce to you today another achieved female blogger: Lynn Casper. Amongst other projects, Lynn produces Homoground, a weekly queer music podcast, and runs a personal tumblr called scantron.

Bunny Boys?

Not too long ago, "news" broke in Germany that a bunch of insurance brokers were celebrating lucrative deals by taking advantage of prostitutes and snorting cocaine in an open air brothel. Sibylle Berg, a Swiss author who describes herself on her Twitter with the words "buys nothing, fucks no one", has dedicated her weekly SPIEGEL ONLINE column to the issue. In "I've had it, Men!" (in German "Männer, ich habe es satt!") she wonders, amongst other things, how the world would react if suddenly women were to become pimps, make men walk the streets in strings and so forth. Quite a fun read, indeed - if it weren't for Berg's inherent stereotyping of all men as horny, black men as slaves, veiled women as oppressed, and naked ones as desperate. Good on the German blogosphere for offering an alternate perspective! For a worthwhile counterstatement, please read Nadia Shehadeh's comment entitled "I've had it, Ms. Berg!" (in German: "Frau Berg, ich habe es satt!").

OKCon 2011

On 30th June and the 1st of July, the 6th Annual Open Knowledge Conference will take place in Berlin. The event aims at bringing together individuals and organizations interested in all things open knowledge. If you've been following GCB, you know that I agree with the organizers' assumption that  

open knowledge promises significant social and economic benefits in a wide range of areas from governance to science, culture to technology. Opening up access to content and data can radically increase access and reuse, bridge gaps, improve transparency and thus foster innovation and increase societal welfare. 

The conference programme looks super interesting, and I'm keen to go! Let's hope my boss sees the necessity of me being there, too, since both conference days are weekdays... Tickets are available for one or two days respectively - there's still a chance to grab some at early bird rates before 31st May.

Brave as any woman can be, CBS reporter Lara Logan recalls the February night on Tahrir Square in Egypt, when a mob tore off her clothes and violently sexually assaulted her in the middle of the road. She decided she would only tell this story once, hoping that this one telling is heard by as many people as possible. (Source)

In another US TV-related story, Roseanne Barr, one of my childhood heroines, has written an essay on sexism in the media industry and her difficult rise to stardom: And I should know. I  loved the part where ABC sent her a cake to celebrate her show's one year anniversary in 1988; knowing what men were given for equal success, Roseanne and her co-star George Clooney took the cake outside where she snapped a picture of him hitting it with a baseball bat to send it to the producers. Apparently, Yoga benefits breast cancer patients. Among affected women tested, those practicing Yoga while in treatment were of better general health, had lower stress hormone levels and saw improvement of their physical state altogether. Source and more information.

While I have recently stopped eating meat and have been very good at forgoing fish, too, I am aware that not all of us are willing to give up the tastes we grew up with for ecological reasons just yet. So I was happy to see that Canadian blogger Eco Yogini collected a bunch of eco-tips for eating fish.

The Black Weblog Awards

Yesterday, the Black Weblog Awards published this year's nominees for the prize in a bunch of categories: From 'Best Business Blog' to 'Best Comic Blog', over 150 people have been nominated in a total of 37 categories (!) for their social media work. Wow, that's a whole load of new information sources to explore!

Founded in 2005, the Black Weblog Awards give recognition to Black bloggers (and those of the African diaspora) which were largely overlooked by other Internet award events online. Participants of the contest come from over 90 countries which probably makes the award the most widespread Internet award event for Black bloggers. Please find more info on the contest and how to participate in the future here.

tumblr, a comparatively new blog software, has caused quite a stir in the blogosphere since its launch in 2007. Albeit the multi-media possibilities the platform offers, it has mainly been used to quickly and easily share images - often anonymously. 

All the more happy I am to be able to introduce to you today Leah Leslie, editor of the wonderfully overflowing art collection Fuck Yeah, Book Arts. Please follow the jump below for an interesting interview with the mind behind this beautiful and super-successful project.

Anne Roth

If it weren't for Anne Roth of annalist, perhaps there would be no GIRLS CAN BLOG today. It was Anne who, a little over a year ago, initiated a discussion on the invisibility of female bloggers: Where and who were they? Why would mainstream media only ever refer to our male colleagues? Inspired by Nadine Lantzsch (whose portrait is available here), I wrote my first post on the matter and created GCB... And wow, what a ride this blog has been! 

But back to Anne and her admirable pragmatism. Just ask yourself this: How would you react if your partner was mistaken for a terrorist and put into jail on the grounds of, well, nothing?

For German Readers: Blogger gegen Tierversuche

Zwischendurch mal wieder eine kleine Mitmach-Aktion: Die Pseudoerbse, die ich erst heute über den veganen Blog Food and Fotos entdeckte, ruft dazu auf, den links abgebildeten Button auf dem eigenen Blog einzubinden und damit ein Zeichen gegen Tierversuche zu setzen. Die Idee ist, hinter dem Icon auf http://bgt.pseudoerbse.de zu verlinken, wo Informationen rund um Tierschutz gesammelt und zur Verfügung gestellt werden sollen. Ganz nebenbei entsteht so eine Linksammlung von Blogs, die sich für das Thema interessieren. Clever!

The Mädchenmannschaft elaborates on an English-language interview with media activist Jaclyn Friedman. Amongst other things, Jaclyn is co-editor of an anthology entitled Yes Means Yes! Visions of Female Sexual Power and a World without Rape. She also spoke at this year's Re:publica.

Nachdem ich sie vorletzte Woche vorgeschlagen hatte, durfte Ninia LaGrande am letzten Samstag ein Telefoninterview mit Marcus von Trackback führen. Es geht um den deutschen Werberat, Poetry Slams und DIE Blog. Yeah! Bei Minute 51:47 geht's los!

Nikola Richter hat einen Artikel für den Tagesspiegel geschrieben, der auf ihrem eigenen Blog in der Vollversion erhältlich ist. Darin geht es im weitesten Sinne um selbständige Arbeit zu Hause und die damit verbundenen Risiken. Der Nachrichtendienst Turi2 hat das aufgegriffen und mit folgenden Worten zusammengefasst: ‎"Nikola Richter beklagt die Lage der digitalen Arbeiter, die zwar vom Zwang der täglichen Anwesenheit in der Firma befreit sind, dafür aber den Preis der "Unsichtbarkeit" zahlen. Ihr Burnout finde unbemerkt im Home Office statt. Simone Finkenwirth wurde nach unserem Vortrag auf der #rp11 vom Buchreport zur Seite genommen, dem sie den Unterschied zwischen Literaturblogs und dem Feuilleton erklärt: Das Internet erreicht mehr Leser.

So the presentation I told you about below went really well - phew! Everyone at About:Fashion was super friendly and interested, the atmosphere was calm and easy with natural light, and I managed to engage the audience in a couple of talks on blogging. I love when education gets to happen in small and intimate-ish circles: No overcrowded spaces, lots of working material for everyone to experiment with, and enough time to discuss all questions at due length. 

Especially interesting for me was that one of the participants, Thuy, is a professional blogger at Two for Fashion - a fashion blog that belongs to the world's largest mail order company OTTO. Again, I jumped at the chance and asked Thuy a couple of questions on film... only to have my handy video recorder die down on me in the middle of the interview with a full memory card. How embarrassing! Thuy was kind enough to be relaxed about it, though, and just suggested we get together for another attempt when she's in town next time. But of course! And in the meantime I'll go and buy myself a memory card that lasts, like, forever. :)

I am putting the finishing touches on a presentation I've been preparing for a workshop on blogging I'll hold at About:Fashion tomorrow. (About:Fashion is something like a further education institution for people interested in all things design and style.) Besides important basics and Web 2.0 related topics, I'd like to give hands-on advice to both blogging beginners and pros - with a special focus on international fashion blogs. Nach einer ersten kurzen Stippvisite im Oktober 2010 wurde ich, wie bereits angekündigt, noch einmal in die Sendung Trackback eingeladen. Dieses Mal durfte ich in der Rubrik "Blogger privat" ab Minute 47:42 ein paar Fragen beantworten. (Inzwischen weiß ich dank Wikipedia übrigens auch, was es mit der  DNS-Frage auf sich hatte, und natürlich war meine spontan geratene Antwort völliger Müll, denn es soll nicht gesperrt, sondern gelöscht werden! Ihr merkt: Wenn mein Leben von 50/50-Entscheidungen abhinge, säße ich längst am anderen Ufer des Jordan....) Ermöglicht wurde mir dieser Auftritt durch Katy Derbyshire, die vorletzte Woche selbst aus dem Nähkästchen plaudern durfte. Danke!

Vorhin kam mich Marcus Richter, Macher von Trackback auf Radio Fritz, besuchen, um mir für die nächste Sendung am kommenden Samstag Abend ein paar Fragen zu stellen. Dreist wie ich bin, habe ich anschließend die Gelegenheit am Schopf gepackt und den Spieß umgedreht. Aufgefallen ist mir dabei, was viele bereits wissen: Ich rede zu schnell! Simone beschreibt unseren Netzpoesie Vortrag, aber auch ihren Gesamteindruck der Konferenz, die Elke ziemlich wuselig fand.

Eva Ricarda Lautsch, auch bekannt als die Stadtpiratin, hat beim Freitag über das hatr.org-Projekt und Pluralismus in der deutschen Blogosphäre geschrieben.

Kübra Gümüsay, die unter anderem für die Maedchenmannschaft.net schreibt, hat ihre Eindrücke der Konferenz auf ihrem Blog ein fremdwoerterbuch festgehalten. Unten könnt Ihr sie auch im Interview sehen. Die Geräusche im Hintergrund deuten an, wie voll es im Foyer des Friedrichstadtpalasts es war:

Nadine, ebenfalls von der Mädchenmannschaft, bedauert, dass ein Großteil der hohen Frauenquote in diesem Jahr im Grunde nicht den Veranstaltern zu verdanken ist, sondern uns selbst, die wir uns eigeninitiativ um Mobilisierung der weiblichen Speakerinnen und Organisation entsprechender Events bemüht haben. Ähnlich sieht das auch Nadines Kollegin Helga.

Katrin Rönicke, ehemals ebenfalls Mädchenmannschaft, heute beim neuen feministischen Projekt Frau Lila, beschwert sich zu recht darüber, dass ihr auf Twitter Aussagen untergejubelt wurden, die sie nie getätigt hat.

Zwar keine Frau, dafür aber ein GOWS-affiner (und auch so echt guter) Typ ist Hakan Tanriverdi, der, ebenfalls für den Freitag, eine clevere Nachlese zusammengestellt hat. Er erwähnt darin unter anderem Antje Schrupp, die selbst zwar nicht vor Ort sein, sich anhand der Twitter-Diskussionen um die Panels aber trotzdem eine Meinung bilden konnte: Re:publica meets Feminism.

Zum Abschluss fasst Jule vom Augenschmaus schließlich noch ihre persönlichen Highlights der Konferenz zusammen, zu denen auch eine zufällige Begegnung mit Sascha Lobo gehörte (siehe Bild rechts).

I just noticed that five days have passed since my last post and that I haven't blogged a single word about how I liked the Re:publica 2011. So, what did I like best? Meeting people and seeing lots of GCB bags being carried around. There were also some really good panels like Sascha Lobo's talk on trolls and War Online - Blogging from the Frontline. What did I like least? The adverse conditions Simone and I had to hold our talk in. While the Internet was running smoothly and our sound material worked, the old wooden door was opened and shut incessantly, squeaking like hell.

Also, we were forced to start 10 minutes behind schedule, which confused us to the point where we forgot to properly introduce ourselves and our panel on literary review blogs and poetry on the web. What I had imagined to become a very smooth and easy presentation, became "a ride" how someone put it - "an informative one". Our audience was made up of around 40 people, perhaps a third of them is pictured in the photo above. If you're interested in what I spoke about exactly, check this set of links. Some of the material I provided is German, but there's lots of English language content, too. And if I'm not mistaken, Simone will make available her presentation sometime soon, too.

Overall, though, the experience was worthwhile and I was glad to have spoken on something other than cyberfeminism - as much as I'm interested in that topic, I think it's important for women to prove their expertise in areas sounding less intimidating to men. ;) So, would I do it again? I guess, if just to hang out with cool people like @TheGurkenkaiser and my lovely Girls On Web Society ladies. Pleasure to meet you all!

Today, thanks to the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, I got a little sneak peak of Cyrus Farivar's talk at the conference. He just recently finished his book The Internet Of Elsewhere. In it, he discusses the the role of the Internet as a catalyst in transforming communications, politics, and economics in Estonia (where access to the Internet has become a human right not long ago!), South Korea, Senegal, and Iran.

If you think these countries sound a little distant, let me surprise you by saying that Korean food tastes absolutely fantastic! ... Just kidding. I was going to hint at the connectivity of things: We can really learn a lot from each other, especially when it comes to typical issues that arise around the accessibility and possibilites of the web: technical availability, equality of distribution, government control and so forth. Cyrus will explain his ideas in more detail at the Friedrichstadtpalast starting at 10 am on Thursday.

Should you be more interested in talks by women but are too lazy to scan the schedule yourself, try the Mädchenmannschaft's collection of female speakers. Part of the conference will be recorded and later made available online. But Simone's and my session on Thursday at 11 am won't be amongst those, I'm afraid. We'll do our best, though, to keep you updated and informed nevertheless, and will make our material available to you as soon as our workshop is finished and we'll find the time. 

I also do apologize for keeping you waiting on the next Blogger Portrait - it's been in the making and will surface to your screens as soon as the re-publica craziness will have died down a bit. I just couldn't fit it all into last week. See you tomorrow, I hope!

Die Klappentexterin und ich werden am Donnerstag der diesjährigen Re:publica einen Workshop zu Review-Blogs und Lyrikseiten leiten. Katrin Rönicke, die privat hier und neu auch für das Projekt Frau Lila bloggt, hat einen lesenswerten Artikel geschrieben: Wir sind das Netz. Er handelt von Frauen im Netz, beinhaltet aber nicht nur bekannte Fakten zum Thema, sondern gibt auch den ein- oder anderen Denkanstoß. Toll ist, dass nicht nur die Mädchenmannschaft und Girls Can Blog Erwähnung finden, sondern auch die Facebook-Gruppe Girls On Web Society, die sich nächste Woche im Rahmen der Re:publica 2011 mal wieder "in echt" treffen wird. Darüber hinaus ist schön, dass Der Freitag 'Frauen im Netz' gleich zum Wochenthema ernannt hat und weitere Artikel, die sich z.B. mit Fragen des Vorhandenseins von Autorinnen in der Wikipedia befassen, mit in den Ring wirft. (Wer schon eine Weile hier mitliest, könnte sich an diesen GCB-Post vom letzten November erinnern.)

In den Kommentaren zu Katrins Artikel vermisst Michael B. auf GCB  frauengeführte Blogs zu "Politik, Informatik und Computerspielen". Zu letzteren habe ich zwar tatsächlich bisher leider noch keinen im Angebot, für Politik und Informatik kann ich aber durchaus Empfehlungen abgeben: Kathrin (IT), Gudrun (beides), Melanie (IT), Margaret (Politik), Cathrin (vor allem Politik in Vietnam), Eva (Politik), Katharina (Politik und USA) oder, wenn der Herr arabisch spricht, auch Reem (Politik) - um nur einige zu nennen. Wie Ihr wisst, sind weitere Vorschläge in allen Kategorien  jederzeit willkommen!

Das nächste Bloggerinnen-Portrait ist übrigens in Arbeit, leider komme ich derzeit nicht wirklich zu was. Mit der Bitte um etwas Geduld verabschiede ich mich jetzt in den Feierabend!

Amongst others, Mara has been nominated for the Superblogs 2011 Award. Until yesterday, people could suggest their favorite blogs in ten different categories, and now voting is open until 7 April. Unfortunately, this has only come to my attention today, otherwise I would have of course informed you about this earlier.

Erin compiled a few helpful tips for uncluttering your schedule. These are greatly appreciated, as trying to keep your obligations to a minimum can be tough. In another helpful post, she advises you on how to keep your to do list neat and tidy. German GCB readers might remember my Listen post of last February.
