Jana Mänz of Janasworld

Jana Mänz, editor of Janasworld, is one of the few women who have made it onto the German blog charts - an assortment of weblogs ranked by the number of incoming links

Follow the jump below to find out more about Jana's most successful project and what she likes best about her blog. Or read on to get some straightforward blogging advice...

What's your name, how old are you, and what do you do for a living (or all day, for that matter)?

My name is Jana, I am 34 years young and currently on parental leave.

How long have you been blogging? How did you get around to blogging?

I took up blogging in March 2007, but I only set up Janasworld in February 2008. I was eight months pregnant and wanted to keep my far away family up-to-date on what was happening.

What's your blog called and why?

My blog is called "Janasworld - am Rande des Wahnsinns" ["Jana's World - On the Edge of Reason"]. Readers of my blog will be able to explain the subtitle quickly. Most of my friends think I'm a nutcase, if only for keeping a blog. I borrowed that sentence from Bridget Jones. Sometimes I feel like her sister. I have a similar body, found my Mark Darcy, and am always putting my foot in it. *smile* I don't smoke, though, and never wear bunny costumes.

What are you blogging about? Why?

My first topics were pregnancy, giving birth, baby. But after the first year I wasn't interested in those topics as much anymore and rediscovered my love of photography that had been dormant due to professional reasons. Plus I'm interested in many other things: the Internet, Photoshop, politics, photo projects, literature, family, and so forth. I keep finding issues I want to write blog posts about. So besides the photography focus, my blog has been very diverse. For a while I thought I needed to specialize on one topic alone. But I found that that not only was against my nature, but that each of my topics has its own target audience, too...

Who's your target audience?

... I wouldn't know for sure. Many mothers are reading along still, and then people with own blogs on subjects like photography, literature, IT, etc. It was only recently that a blogging friend of mine said that she liked my blog for being read and commented on by both women and men equally. I agree, I think that's fantastic!

Who designed your blog? How much was that? In case you designed your own layout: Where did you learn how to?

I did everything myself, and I had taught myself how to. My blog is based on a freely usable Wordpress-Theme. Any Internet search engine will become my best friend when I need to solve technical problems. I'll have to admit, though, that from time to time having someone who could programme a few things for me would be nice. So far I haven't found anyone, though, who understands what I'm after, especially not any female programmers.

Which software and which host do you use? Can you recommend them?

I've been using Wordpress and my host is Allinkl. I can recommend them, they're already my fourth provider and the best I've had so far. My advice would be not to try to save money when it comes to providers. I've been there and done that... and Wordpress tells its own tale altogether.

What role play photos, MP3-files or video clips on your blog? If you use them, would you mind showing us one?

As I run a photography blog, obviously photos play an important role. Videos and MP3 files are less relevant, if anything I'll embed a youtube clip. That's only rarely, though.

I have put together a portfolio of my favorite photos purposely for GCB, by the way:

In order to motivate myself to take more photos, I've been participating in various photo projects of other bloggers, and have also initiated two of those myself. My most successful one is called "zwölf2010" ["twelve2010"] (http://www.janasworld.de/fotografie/fotoprojekt-zwoelf2010-2), and already more than 200 bloggers have been participating. The project runs over twelve months and is about taking a picture from the same angle at one and the same spot, documenting growth and change. Since the project has been that successful, I'll continue next year as "zwölf2011" ["twelve2011"]. Whoever feels like partaking and can get hold of a camera may do so.

How many readers do you have? How many would you like to have? Does their number matter to you at all?

On average, I get around 8.000 to 10.000 readers a month. That's not a lot and I don't care about that number much. Comments are more important: How many comments get my articles on average, which one gets commented on and which doesn't? What is it my readers are interested in and care about? Soon I'll hit the 10.000 comment border, over 6.000 of which have been posted this year. I think that's great!

And since I've installed the Facebook-Like button, I've been getting another kind of feedback. As in: "I don't feel like writing anything now, but I want to let you know I like this". I can say about myself that I don't care about my readers' numbers, but about their messages mainly.

Can you learn how to blog? Do you need to know a lot about computers? Do you have any advice for beginners?

Personally I think that one can't learn how to blog. Firstly, because you need to like to write, but at the same time have to like publicity and feel a sense of mission. Strangers will be reading your stuff. And while you may be able to learn how to write, you won't be able to learn how to be authentic. Readers are quick in noticing whether someone is putting on a show or whether what she writes comes from the inside.

You have to know a fair bit about computers, too. I'm surprised every time when I see bloggers asking questions on their own blogs like "Where can I upload a picture?" and "Why can't I link to this or that?". Before you start blogging, you should concern yourself not only with your computer and operating system (if need be also some image editing), but also with the blogging system.

My advice: Practice, practice, practice, read forums, ask friends, and practice more. All I know I taught myself, and every blogger should bring that kind of thirst of knowledge with her. Oh dear, that sounds pretty schoolmarmish...

Have you made negative experiences with blogging, too? What kind?

Yes, I have made negative experiences that almost caused me to stop blogging. Unfortunately I had to learn that with more readers and "success" come enviers. People who can't see that blogging is hard work, and who write nasty e-mails or comments. Some even write own posts with the sole purpose of offending you. These experiences have made me more cautious, I'm thinking thrice each time before publishing anything.

And have you ever made money through your blog? If yes, how so?

Yes, a little.

Do you use twitter, too? Why (not)? What pros and cons do you see when it comes to twitter?

I own a Twitter account, but I barely use it. Only for very important posts that I want to distribute among more and different readers or to ask some questions: http://twitter.com/janasworld

Which other female bloggers can you recommend? Why?

I can recommend plenty of blogs run by women: Both the ones that I listed on my blog roll, and the ones that are featured on my "100 deutschsprachige Frauen Fotografie Blogs" ["100 Female German Photo Blogs" (http://www.janasworld.de/fotografinnen-blogs/). I started this list because I had only ever read same sex recommendations on the blogs of my male colleagues, and because photography lists like wikio are dominated by men. And while photography may be a male domain, I have always wondered where the women were. By now, there are more than 140 blogs on the list and each of those is worth a visit.

Of course I thought about which ones to single out and I'm going for Bea of Demoiselle Libellule (http://demoiselle-libellule.blogspot.com). My reasons are simple. We spoke on the phone for the first time a couple of months ago and started a telephone friendship. We have a weekly phone date where we support each other in reaching our individual goals. In her I found someone who shares my passions. I've been regretting a lot that we've been living so far apart form each other and haven't been able to meet in person yet.

Weshalb?
Meine ersten Themen waren Schwangerschaft, Geburt, Baby.

Was beschäftigen und interessiert meine Leser?

Welche(n) anderen frauengeführten Blogs kannst Du empfehlen? Warum?
