Jule of Aus dem Leben einer Stinkesocke

At 18, Jule is the youngest blogger introduced on GCB so far. On her blog "Aus dem Leben einer Stinkesocke" she describes her life as a paraplegic.

Follow the jump below to find out who Jule's blog is targeted at, about  sexual harassment online, and why using the spell check before posting is mandatory.

What's your name, how old are you, and what do you do for a living (or all day, for that matter)?

My name is Julia, but my people call me Jule. I turned 18 a few weeks ago and attend a vocational training school.

How long have you been blogging? How did you get around to blogging?

I've been blogging since the beginning of 2009. Long story short: I was in hospital after a severe traffic accident, and after twelve months of medical treatment and rehab I was getting on the nerves of people around me a lot. My self-pity was endless and I my head nearly burst from all sorts of unsorted thoughts. A psychologist advised me on writing them down. I did and began posting them anonymously in a forum. Quickly, I had plenty of regular readers who suggested I write a book. They found my life very interesting and said I could tell stories well. I never wrote a book, but decided to start a blog instead.

What's your blog called and why?

Admittedly, "Aus dem Leben einer Stinkesocke" ["On life as a stinky sock"] isn't a particularly original title. I got my nickname "stinky sock" during my stay at a medical rehab centre. One day while making my bed, the staff couldn't think of anything more motivating than calling me a stinky boot [as in sourpuss]. When I didn't react to that, the nurses started philosophizing about boots not being allowed into bed and I could at most be a stinky sock. As I had cold feet most of the time, one of the nurses shouted: "Here! Indeed. Stinky socks!" She bent over me and smelt my feet. Finally I had to smile and said: "You people are out of your minds. Unbelievable." The nurse took away my dirty laundry and rhymed: "Stinky sock was very ill, now she's smiling, wonderful!" That very moment the ward round entered the room and that was that, I had a nickname. At first I found it really embarrassing, but later I hung a photo of my feet and a sock over my bed.

What are you blogging about? Why?

I blog about everyday life. Complete with all ups and downs. In order to sort my thoughts and to get feedback, but mainly for reading older diary entries on bad days. I like to tell myself: "Look how bad you were then. You'll manage your current problem just fine!"

Who's your target audience?

I have no target group. I'm my blog's own target. ;)

Who designed your blog? How much was that? In case you designed your own layout: Where did you learn how to?

I designed my blog myself, which drove me insane as I had never done something like it before.

Which software and which host do you use? Can you recommend them?

I use blogger.com and can recommend that.

What role play photos, MP3-files or video clips on your blog? If you use them, would you mind showing us one?

They only play a very small role. I like to write a lot and only rarely have matching photos. MP3s and video clips I don't use at all, as I don't want to bother with copyright issues and technical requirements. Also I want everyone to be able to read my posts immediately, without millions of bytes having to be transferred prior to that. The only image that influenced my blog was the one of the stinky sock:

How many readers do you have? How many would you like to have? Does their number matter to you at all?

At first just a couple of people. Today, around one year after I installed a counter, I surpassed 75.000 visits. Depending on new entries (I don't post everyday), I get up to 750 visits in 24 hours. I'm not writing to attract readers, but it makes me happy when people find my stories interesting and like to read what I write.

Can you learn how to blog? Do you need to know a lot about computers? Do you have any advice for beginners?

I think you can't learn how to blog. You can either write or you don't. Just as there are people that can tell stories in a way that makes you imagine a movie, there are people who can write breathtakingly well. I know almost nothing about computers. My advice is to make use of the spell check. If you're not sure about orthography, at least try and figure out what the red worm beneath the word is trying to tell you.

Have you made negative experiences with blogging, too? What kind?

Yes, absolutely. Due to my paraplegia I can only command my bladder and bowel - that are controlled by the spinal cord - indirectly. While the bowel is manageable quite well even without a direct connection to the brain, an autonomous bladder is asking for trouble whenever it will disturb you the most, i.e. on the road. This makes the diaper industry happy. And all the fetishists that think I'm writing about my incontinence because peeing myself turns me on.

And have you ever made money through your blog? If yes, how so?

No.

Do you use twitter, too? Why (not)? What pros and cons do you see when it comes to twitter?

No. I like to babble a lot and Twitter ain't made for that.

Which other female bloggers can you recommend? Why?

None. I rarely read other blogs.

Welche(n) anderen frauengeführten Blogs kannst Du empfehlen? Warum?
Keine. Ich lese selten andere Blogs.
