Franziska Schmid of Veggie Love

Veggie Love, edited by consultant Franziska Schmid, is the first vegan blog I came across. In spite of the blog's very young age, Franziska puts great effort into her posts - which makes reading it highly enjoyable.

Follow the jump below to understand why to Franziska, Veggie Love is not just a blog name but a whole way of life, whom she really writes for, and why the most difficult thing when it comes to blogging is finding an issue to blog about...

What's your name, how old are you, and what do you do for a living (or all day, for that matter)?

My name is Franziska Schmid and I am the founder and curator of „Veggie Love“. I write about the sustainable and green way of life: On my blog, in print and online publications. Furthermore, I give talks and consult companies with regards to trending eco-topics. Besides Veggie Love I am running a company with a colleague, Die Netsetterinnen [The Netsetters]. We advise people on topics surrounding the Social Web.

How long have you been blogging? How did you get around to blogging?

I've been blogging since August 2010. I've always wanted to write for fashion magazines or edit my own lifestyle publication. Since I am curating my blog like I would curate such a magazine, I was able to realize that dream. And who knows what is yet to come...

What's your blog called and why?

My blog is called „Veggie Love“, because life is all about love: It's about loving yourself, your family,  your partner, your work or mission, and also the environment and animals. And because being a vegan, I love vegetables very much, I came up with the name. But to me, Veggie Love means much more than just that. I call my whole way of life Veggie Love.

What are you blogging about? Why?

I write about my green and vegan life. I am an avid, very happy vegan, who finds ecological lifestyles to be cool and pretty. I, too, love pink nail polish, red lipstick and cupcakes, but no human or animal should suffer because of the way these things are produced. I've always researched and read a lot, I liked to travel and try things. All my experiences go into my blog: Restaurants, food, recipes & cooking, cosmetics, fashion, events, and of course people I meet who are behind green brands or products. I like to share my knowledge, and if by that I can inspire someone to make changes to her or his live - that's fantastic.

Who's your target audience?

When I write, I picture three particular people who are very different from one another. I have received positive feedback from people who have been eating less meat and also from vegans that appreciate me discussing veganism without wagging a finger and wearing batic tunics. I address all sorts of people who share a common interest in environmentally conscious living.

Who designed your blog? How much was that? In case you designed your own layout: Where did you learn how to?

The wonderful Judith Hettlage (www.judithhettlage.com) designed and programmed my blog. I have been very lucky to work with her. The Veggie Love logo was designed by Kirsten Lauterbach of Nokidesign (www.nokidesign.de), and again, I was very lucky to get to work with such a cool and creative woman.

Which software and which host do you use? Can you recommend them?

I use Wordpress and am hosting carbon-neutral with Domainfactory. I can recommend both a lot.

What role play photos, MP3-files or video clips on your blog? If you use them, would you mind showing us one?

Photos play an important role - I think it's crucial to add a beautiful photo atop each post. Most of the time I use my own photos. I like taking them, but I am no photography expert whatsoever, also not when it comes to image editing. I would like to know more about both, though, that's on my to do list. In the future, I'd love to use more video content, too, maybe film my own interviews. MP3 files aren't as important to me, I find moving images much more interesting.

How many readers do you have? How many would you like to have? Does their number matter to you at all?

Currently, I get around 1.500 visits a month, and I have only just started. I only check those numbers irregularly, but of course reaching many people is important to me.

Can you learn how to blog? Do you need to know a lot about computers? Do you have any advice for beginners?

I have always liked to write, especially about issues I was personally interested in and that I find important. But liking to write is no requirement of blogging. There are many blogs that predominantly show images. Basically, blogging is more about finding an issue an then working it - either through images, text, videos, illustrations or music. Whoever can write emails and can handle Facebook or Twitter will encounter no technical problems when it comes to blogging.

Have you made negative experiences with blogging, too? What kind?

Absolutely not! On the contrary, lots of great things happen. I am getting to know many people, have great conversations, receive nice mail from readers and companies that want to work with me. The only thing that bothers me a little is that blogs still aren't taken seriously - other than conventional journalism. At least in Germany, blogging as a business model certainly hasn't arrived yet.

And have you ever made money through your blog? If yes, how so?

As there are no banner ads on Veggie Love, I am not making any money through my blog directly. I like to remain independent. The blog is my digital business card, core of my work and oftentimes reason for journalistic work and invites as speaker. Thus, I am making money through it indirectly. And also through sharing my knowledge around green lifestyle and the social web as an entrepreneur.

Do you use twitter, too? Why (not)? What pros and cons do you see when it comes to twitter?

I love twitter! Other than blogs, twitter means real time communication. It allows me to distribute and receive information quickly - and it taught me to make my point in 140 characters. Lots of information I need reaches me through twitter. I am out and about often, and can share stuff via twitter that would  not make it onto my blog. Facebook is similar, I wouldn't like to miss that as an addendum.

Which other female bloggers can you recommend? Why?

I loven Garance Doré's blog (http://www.garancedore.fr/en), I could look at those beautiful pictures for hours.

Kris Carr of Crazy Sexy Life (http://crazysexylife.com) I can also recommend. She gathered a whole posse of inspiring people around herself.

Greta Eagan (www.gretaguide.com) runs a great blog on sustainable fashion and has also started a project called Fashion Me Green (www.fashionmegreen.com).

I also like Maya Villiger's (http://www.turnedout.tv) collages and text a lot.

Welche(n) anderen frauengeführten Blogs kannst Du empfehlen? Warum?
