Anna Niestroj of BLINKBLINK

Graphic designer Anna Niestroj runs two corresponding blogs: The beautiful BLINKBLINK - something like an aesthetic pin board - and Zukunft Arbeit, where she discusses her profession's future.

Follow the jump below if you're interested in why she runs two instead of one blog, why navigating social platforms well is key to finding readers, and to hear about her only - yet bitter - negative experience with blogging. And while you're at it, watch out for GCB's new, 14th interview question!

What's your name, how old are you, and what do you do for a living (or all day, for that matter)?

I am Anna, 25 years old, living in Zurich and Berlin. I studied communications design and am currently working on my Master's degree in Trends at Zurich University of the Arts.

How long have you been blogging? How did you get around to blogging?

I've been blogging regularly since September 2008. I had a blog even before that, but deleted it after writing two or three posts. It was only when I understood the blogosphere's quality and dimension that I wanted to be a part of it. (Sometimes it takes a while until you find just what you're interested in...) Ever since then, I've been an addict.

What's your blog called and why?

I own two blogs at the moment: "BLINKBLINK" is the first and my playground. I find its title onomatopoeic and it describes my own colorful, blinking world well. "Zukunft Arbeit" ["Future Work"] I set up when I started my Master's programme, as a basis for my thesis that I've just begun to write.

What are you blogging about? Why?

"BLINKBLINK" is meant to be friendly, creative, inspire to look into the details of daily life and to create your own little beautiful things. It's a rather personal and easy blog, like a digital pin board, a small guide to the interesting places on the web.

"Zukunft Arbeit" ["Future Work"] is more theoretic and still being shaped. At its core lies my pessimism regarding my own work environment - fear of unemployment. In Germany, designers face a certain lack of understanding, especially with companies that aren't working in the same field. Abilities of colleagues of mine just remain ignored. After all, you're not telling your baker how to bake his bread... In Switzerland that is a little different, which gives me hope. "Zukunft Arbeit" is public, because I want to show that designers think about a gazillion things and work theoretically and conceptually a lot. The blog is also supposed to assist me in writing my thesis on "Youth and Status on the Internet", documenting sources and become a public work book. It helps me sort through and store interesting content I find on the web. As such, it is so much more handy than a paper back notebook. I just create tags and registers on my blog.

Who's your target audience?

"BLINKBLINK"'s readers, I think, are female and around my age. I'm not sure, though. Basically, I want to address nice creative people from all around the world that are interested in similar things like myself.

"Zukunft Arbeit" hasn't much going for itself yet. Sometimes a couple of BLINKBLINK readers get lost and visit it, students or professors. I'm hoping to reach fellow designers and other people interested in the business soon, though.

Who designed your blog? How much was that? In case you designed your own layout: Where did you learn how to?

I did. It took forever. I learned some basic screen and web design at uni. Blogging I taught myself - whenever I had a problem with HTML or CSS I found help in various forums. Knowing some English helped, as like that you will find what you're looking for faster.

Which software and which host do you use? Can you recommend them?

I'm with blogger.com and content with it. Only recently they renewed their design templates so that working with them has become even more comfortable; the preview function, for example, is working perfectly now. Images, too, you can post much larger now than before. Without any HTML knowledge, you'll be bound to the available ready-made designs, though. For me as a designer, that wasn't an option. ;)

The blog I deleted two years ago, I started my with typepad.com. I didn't like its interface though. Besides blogger.com, I can recommend Wordpress.

What role play photos, MP3-files or video clips on your blog? If you use them, would you mind showing us one?

On "BLINKBLINK" photos play the most important role, as there I barely write. Around 80% of those are my own, which is why I granted myself a pro-account with Flickr. :) Videos I find important, too, but I post few, because I myself tend not to watch too many clips on other blogs - unless they are cool animations, tutorials and such. A recent photo that I like a lot:

How many readers do you have? How many would you like to have? Does their number matter to you at all?

I'm not sure exactly, everyone follows their favorite blogs differently. Raw data, as of today, 28.07.2010: 41 readers on Blogger. 27 blog followers on Facebook and 45 fans. 8 and 4 respectively on Bloglovin'. I've got 64 Flickr contacts. As yet, 9 followers on Twitter.

There's certainly much room for more. I'm not all about readers numbers, though. I'd rather have a few very nice and faithful ones.

Can you learn how to blog? Do you need to know a lot about computers? Do you have any advice for beginners?

Sure you can learn how to blog. You need to invest a lot of time in the beginning, stick with it, immerse yourself into the blogosphere, work to get noticed - but it's worth it. Getting a first comment is fantastic. :) Basic knowledge of computers is enough, more important is to know about navigating the social platforms.

Have you made negative experiences with blogging, too? What kind?

Just once - here: http://blinkblink-blinkblink.blogspot.com/2009/06/die-bedrohung-des-handmade-20.html and http://handmadezwonull.blogspot.com/2009/06/metaoverkill.html?showComment=1245751023149#c471259249669565813 respectively.

It was an interesting post and I thought it was pretty rude how the author exposed me in front of her readers: I wasn't supposed to read her blog anymore, although I was writing my bachelor thesis on DIY in Web 2.0 surroundings. Even today I find her reaction inexplicable. She banned me and my comment so that I couldn't leave anymoew comments even if I wanted (which I don't) - I'm still interested in the topic, though.

! NEW QUESTION !
And have you ever made money with your blog? If yes, how so?
I've never directly made money with my blog, no. But it helps in promoting my other work, my mini-leporellos that I'm selling on Dawanda for example. I never thought about placing ads on my blog, as so far I've been ruling them out. I might change my mind one day, but only ever for a good cause. Until when I leave uni in 2011, my blogs should communicate well who I am and what I can be booked for. I see my future more as a freelancer than an employee, but I'll only decide that when I have to. ;)

Do you use twitter, too? Why (not)? What pros and cons do you see when it comes to twitter?

Yes, I've just started. But it hasn't really gotten to me yet, I can't see a personal advantage.

Which other female bloggers can you recommend? Why?

Which and why are listed under the "Blog Parade" tab on "BLINKBLINK". :)

Nackte Daten, heute 28.07.2010: Bei Blogger 41 Leser.

Welcher Art?
Nur ein mal - hier:

http://blinkblink-blinkblink.blogspot.com/2009/06/die-bedrohung-des-handmade-20.html

bzw.

http://handmadezwonull.blogspot.com/2009/06/metaoverkill.html?showComment=1245751023149#c471259249669565813

Welche(n) anderen frauengeführten Blogs kannst Du empfehlen? Warum?
