Carmen Rüter of m.e.t.r.o.n.o.m.

Carmen Rüter's blog m.e.t.r.o.n.o.m. is one of my favorites in the German-speaking blogosphere. Probably, because it combines information and style in simple posts like this one. Or maybe because it's an Austrian blog like Blica and Consens - I find them extravagant and different from the rest.

Follow the jump for an interesting interview on space and time, the advantages of Twitter hashtags, and a cool collection of international urbanism links.

What's your name, how old are you, and what do you do for a living (or all day, for that matter)?

Carmen Rüter, freelance writer, photographer and curator. As soon as work is done, I study Regional and Infrastructural Planning and Sociology.

How long have you been blogging? How did you get around to blogging?

Since 2008, crucial factors were curiosity regarding the medium and sense of mission.

What's your blog called and why?

m.e.t.r.o.n.o.m. The name was a spontaneous decision based on my examination of our understanding of space and time during a past seminar in architecture.

What are you blogging about? Why?

I started with a wild mix of everything. Parallel to my interests, there seems to develop a focus on urbanism, gender studies and visual culture. I'm especially curious about the interrelationship of space and gender relations, or power relations also.

Who's your target audience?

Everyone interested.

Who designed your blog? How much was that? In case you designed your own layout: Where did you learn how to?

I use a free template by Wordpress. Smaller changes I can do on my own.

Which software and which host do you use? Can you recommend them?

I use Wordpress and can absolutely recommend it. It's Open Source software. Who reads the rights of use will quickly understand that it's product philosophy is completely different from, for example, Google's Blogger/ Blogspot.

What role play photos, MP3-files or video clips on your blog? If you use them, would you mind showing us one?

In a visually oriented culture (moving) images are an essential medium. As a photographer, I try to post mainly my own shots.

How many readers do you have? How many would you like to have? Does their number matter to you at all?

I get around 100 visits a day, their number increasing steadily - depending on my frequency of posting, the number of hits varies. Of course I like it when my readers react. Without any resonance, blogging is only half the fun!

Can you learn how to blog? Do you need to know a lot about computers? Do you have any advice for beginners?

When I started blogging, I only had very rudimentary knowledge of computers. But my curiosity about the medium led me to try many things. Learning how to blog works just like learning any other software: Trial and error.

Have you made negative experiences with blogging, too? What kind?

Mostly, I have made positive experiences. A number of contacts and projects I wouldn't have made without my blog are directly down to it.

And have you ever made money through your blog? If yes, how so?

I don't earn money with my blog. This has the advantage of me being absolutely free in terms of content. It's my personal playground. But I do receive inquires about my blog. For example, I also blog professionally at Austrianfashion.net, for the British avant-garde magazine ThePOP or am currently curating the blog of Vienna's Gemeidebaufestival ["Community Construction Festival"].

Do you use twitter, too? Why (not)? What pros and cons do you see when it comes to twitter?

I use Twitter a lot to link back to new blog posts. Like that, I can target tweets by using hashtags and reach people interested in my topics. Twitter, too, is a great source for new contacts. Unfortunately, I'm not using a smart phone yet. That would make using Twitter even more exciting.

Which other female bloggers can you recommend? Why?

As my German favorites have been mentioned here many times before, I am going to pick a few form the international box...

Candy Chang is an urban planner, designer and artist. She lives in New Orleans and has been showcasing her involvement with urban space in a notebook that is worth seeing very much: http://candychang.com/

On Homebodies, Liz Arnold shows us her friends' living spaces in New York in a personal and unpretentious way: http://lizarnold.blogspot.com/

Andrée-Anne Dupuis Bourret researches real and fictional spaces on her blog. Le Territoire Des Sens is one of the photos-only blogs I really appreciate for its themed focus: http://territoiredessens.blogspot.com/

Mimi Zeiger is editor of a magazine called Loud Paper. On her blog, she posts news on architecture and urbanism: http://loudpaper.typepad.com/

Welche(n) anderen frauengeführten Blogs kannst Du empfehlen? Warum?
Da meine deutschsprachigen Lieblinge bereits vielfach Erwähnung fanden, greife ich in die internationale Kiste...
