Kirsten Brodde of Grüne Mode

Today, please meet author and activist Kirsten Brodde. With an interesting biography and lots of front-line editorial work experience, her blog Grüne Mode is certainly worth a visit.

Follow the jump below to read up on Kirsten's environmental background, why she thinks that choosing an unmistakable blog name is essential, and why to Kirsten, blogging is purposeful work.

What's your name, how old are you, and what do you do for a living (or all day, for that matter)?

Kirsten, 46, journalist and activist.

How long have you been blogging? How did you get around to blogging?

I've been blogging for two years. It was the easiest way of getting attention on a budget, for a green cause.

What's your blog called and why?

Grüne Mode ["Green Fashion"]. Blog titles that are too metaphoric are difficult to understand. I wanted to make clear straight away what my blog is about.

What are you blogging about? Why?

I blog about how to dress decently, as in ecologically and ethically sound. Fashion can absolutely answer questions posed by the 21st century, like how can we handle resources responsibly or treat others fairly. Usually, fashion is just about surface artistry – I believe that's not all there is to it.

Who's your target audience?

All those who know that the real price of a cheap t-shirt is paid by someone else and who'd like to know more about that.

Who designed your blog? How much was that? In case you designed your own layout: Where did you learn how to?

My blog was designed by a male friend, the charming illustration in its header was drawn by a girlfriend - both made me a special price.

Which software and which host do you use? Can you recommend them?

Wordpress – very easy. If I can handle it, anyone can!

What role play photos, MP3-files or video clips on your blog? If you use them, would you mind showing us one?

I don't take my own photos, but embed those of others a lot, also videos, because visualization and aesthetics just come with blogging. I'm much more ambitious when it comes to content - that is my writing. Regrettably, when it comes to blogging, you don't always have enough time to construct pretty sentences.

How many readers do you have? How many would you like to have? Does their number matter to you at all?

I get around 500 visits a day, when I am out on the streets protesting against, for example, Tchibo [a larger German corporation] that number can go up into the thousands. Whether numbers are important to me? I guess so, my blogging is not just some mindless amusement, I want to achieve something through it.

Can you learn how to blog? Do you need to know a lot about computers? Do you have any advice for beginners?

The good news are: You can definitely learn how to blog. If you're new to the blogosphere, find yourself an adviser that can help you in the beginning. I had one, too, and am just advising someone else as well.

Have you made negative experiences with blogging, too? What kind?

If you're opinionated and not trying to be as slippery as an eel, you'll get some head wind. But after ten years with Greenpeace, I'm used to that and am very much looking for debate. Blogging is like joining a conversation on some ancient market square.

And have you ever made money through your blog? If yes, how so?

I get lots of banner offers from advertisers, but I prefer to stay ad-free in order to remain independent. I make money from my blog implicitly, as it is my store sign in terms of journalism and authorship.

Do you use twitter, too? Why (not)? What pros and cons do you see when it comes to twitter?

No Twitter, not enough text. Suitable only for link exchange.

Which other female bloggers can you recommend? Why?

I like women with an attitude that might write about fashion or gardening, but think politically. That's why I became a blog adviser to Zentralgarten (www.zentralgarten.de), a tiny inner city garden in Berlin that is close to nature. It has been eyed critically by neighbours, because its compost heap allegedly beats down the price of the property.

Welche(n) anderen frauengeführten Blogs kannst Du empfehlen? Warum?
