Anne Seubert of Kekstester

Christmas time is cookie time! What better season could there be to introduce Anne Seubert's tempting blog Kekstester ["Cookie Tester"], an homage to cookies in all shapes and forms?

Follow the jump below to find out more about cookie testing as a profession, the lack of German cookie culture (in spite of its long bread baking tradition), and why patience is key to successful blogging...

What's your name, how old are you, and what do you do for a living (or all day, for that matter)?

My name is Anne Seubert, I am 31 and work in a small agency.

How long have you been blogging? How did you get around to blogging?

Before I took up blogging myself, I was reading them for many years. Then came a point when I wanted to try it. Kekstester exists since November 2009. I was fascinated mostly by the close relationship of text and images on food blogs.

What's your blog called and why?

Practically, Kekstester explains itself. A year ago I found out about cookie testing as a profession, liked it, declared myself a cookie tester and started a blog around the issue.

What are you blogging about? Why?

I blog about cookies. I introduce new or special cookies and test cookie recipes. Also, I'm trying to make people indulge in cookies and get into baking, or at least into discovering cookie bakeries that still bake cookies manually as a craft. Why? Because I love cookies and want them to receive some more appreciation. Apart maybe from during Christmas time, I feel cookies are way too underappreciated in Germany. In the US, people savor their cookies, in France they savor their Sablés, and in England everyone loves Shortbread. But in Germany, besides ordinary biscuits, there's been no cookie culture. And this is when we have a long tradition in baking bread. I want to show how many variations of cookies there are, what gems we miss every day, and that life is way too short to gnaw at dry industrial cookies while drinking coffee.

Who's your target audience?

There's no distinct target audience, but of course people with a sweet tooth are frequent guests.

Who designed your blog? How much was that? In case you designed your own layout: Where did you learn how to?

If you work with Wordpress, there are many templates that are free to use. My design is pretty plain, because want to emphasize the images I post. With programming, luckily, my boyfriend helps.

Which software and which host do you use? Can you recommend them?

I can absolutely recommend Wordpress. I embed images by uploading them to flickr first. That works well.

What role play photos, MP3-files or video clips on your blog? If you use them, would you mind showing us one?

Photos are essential to each of my posts and my blog as a whole... Sometimes I even consider posting no text at all. On the one hand, I greatly enjoy composing cookie photos, on the other hand, as a reader, I find photos on blogs indispensable. Photos seduce and simplify the process of deciding for a recipe. I can use them to show how a certain dough should look like, or what form the cookie should have when it comes out the oven.

I hardly use MP3s and videos, but I did produce two episodes of what I call cookie cinema: http://www.kekstester.de/?s=kino.

How many readers do you have? How many would you like to have? Does their number matter to you at all?

I am unsure, but they become more, and that's a cool feeling. In any case, more important to me is the exchange with readers and other bloggers, either through comments, on twitter, or via email.

Can you learn how to blog? Do you need to know a lot about computers? Do you have any advice for beginners?

I guess there should be some excitement about blogging. Who is excited, will blog "well". No need to know more about computers than any other person working with them. I mean, it depends on what you want to achieve through your blog. You will need lots of patience. It might take several months until you'll be able to handle your software well and get the word out to readers. The more people you want to reach, the more important it is to network, to read other blogs, and to leave comments there.

Have you made negative experiences with blogging, too? What kind?

Indeed, none so far.

And have you ever made money through your blog? If yes, how so?

Yes, sometimes I do, but that's certainly not what my blog is about.

Do you use twitter, too? Why (not)? What pros and cons do you see when it comes to twitter?

My twitter is @kekstester and whoever would like to keep informed about my blog posts, curiosities and cookie news is invited to follow me. twitter is great for niche topics like mine and a good way to collect information and stay in touch with other cookie fiends.

Which other female bloggers can you recommend? Why?

Plenty of them. But to limit myself to a selection:

1) For Sunday afternoons: The Pioneer Woman – if you want to immerse yourself in a life alongside Marlboro Man: http://thepioneerwoman.com.

2) For yummy mediterannean inspiration:„Aux Délice d'Aurelie – französisch kochen“ and Foto e Fornelli for Italian cooking and beautiful photos: http://www.franzoesischkochen.de/ and http://fotoefornelli.com/de/

3) In case reading was too much to ask: Lisa Neun's unique comic blog: http://www.lisaneun.com/l9log/

Welche(n) anderen frauengeführten Blogs kannst Du empfehlen? Warum?
Mannigfache.
