Kathrin of DRUEBERLEBEN

Before voting for your favorite female blogger closes at 6 pm today (check out the little image to the right ->), let me seize the opportunity to introduce to you another contestant: Kathrin of DRUEBERLEBEN, a blog on surviving depression.

Follow the jump below to find out why blogging turns Kathrin on, why she believes that every blogger cares about the number of her readers (even those who claim otherwise), and why reaching many people through your writing isn't always nice...

**UPDATE Kathrin just won the Mädchenmannschaft's Female Blogger of the Year 2010 Award! Antje Schrupp, who has been introduced on GCB last year as well, and Anke Gröner came second. Congratulations to all winners and participants! **

What's your name, how old are you, and what do you do for a living (or all day, for that matter)?

My name is Kathrin, I am twenty-five years old, poetry slammer and freelance writer. Which is also how I earn money: By writing stories, texts, words, and by performing on stages.

How long have you been blogging? How did you get around to blogging?

I've been blogging for six years precisely. My first blog was a Livejournal that used to be invite-only. Later, I started coming up with new blogs infrequently, until I recently began DRUEBERLEBEN. I took up blogging in the first place because I used to write a lot throughout my life and because, frankly, I was turned on by the possibilities of getting replies to my work. That seemed much better than just writing for myself at home and hiding the stuff in some drawer.

What's your blog called and why?

My blog is called „DRUEBERLEBEN“ [something along the lines of "SURVIVINGIT"]. There was no "ü" [in German usually needed for the word 'drüber'] and the word's a neologism also which explains the blog's content. The word is made up of three, really: "drüber" [beyond], "über" [above], and "leben" [to live]. It's also alluding to "drüber reden" [to talk about it], which a couple of smart readers understood, but which also leads many more to my URL that mistype in search engines.

What are you blogging about? Why?

I write about depression. But that's way too easy. Actually, I am writing about myself, pretty much as any of us bloggers is writing about herself, really. For nine years now, I've been living with the diagnosis of 'depression' and 'unstable personality disorder', albeit I've gained control over the latter in the meantime. Depression, though, disabled me to the point where I wasn't able to write or perform. It made me lie, because I had to come up with excuses with regards to my illness and stays at clinics. So I decided I wasn't up for hiding anything anymore and that nine years of doing so were enough. Ever since, I've been writing about my everyday life, my medication, my stays at hospitals and successes, about the fighting but also about the failing.

Who's your target audience?

Everyone. I don't only address people concerned personally or their relatives, but also people that don't usually think about the issue. I'm really making an effort to show that depression doesn't have to be super-complicated in medical terms, or dripping from pathos and self-pity. It isn't only comprehensible to people who were there themselves.

Who designed your blog? How much was that? In case you designed your own layout: Where did you learn how to?

I did the design. It was free. You can teach this to you yourself, like the rest of Wordpress.com, if you've got some time at your hands.

Which software and which host do you use? Can you recommend them?

Like I said above, my blog runs on Wordpress.com. This means there's no need for anything else. So far.

What role play photos, MP3-files or video clips on your blog? If you use them, would you mind showing us one?

I make an effort to publish one image per post. I think visuals are important, because text is exhausting. Personally, I read text-only blogs, too, but I know many people who don't. I think it's no news, really, that a blog is more appealing to the audience when it includes visual clues like images, videos and the like. But I don't run a fashion blog, either, meaning there won't be daily photos of myself and videos are rather uncommon.

How many readers do you have? How many would you like to have? Does their number matter to you at all?

I have a great many readers. DRUEBERLEBEN is visited more than one thousand times a day. Unfortunately I am not sure how many of these visitors are regulars. Sometimes their number freaks me out a little, but most of the time it just makes me happy. I would have never thought that a blog discussing my topic could attract so much attention. Some bloggers claim that their readers numbers don't matter to them, but that of course is a scam. Of course I want my blog to be read. If I wouldn't I'd be keeping a diary.

Can you learn how to blog? Do you need to know a lot about computers? Do you have any advice for beginners?

You can learn from criticism. You can visit larger blogs and see how they go about things. You can ask questions in forums and seek help there. You should know the basics, I guess.

Have you made negative experiences with blogging, too? What kind?

Yes, I have. Due to my blog's success, I made a couple of negative experiences. People were accusing me of just writing about this topic to show off. That's amusing, because I would have had to know that DRUEBERLEBEN was going to attract many readers and thus would have had to be straight out clairvoyant. There are so many people trying to expose and defame other bloggers out of sheer envy. I'm not their only target. It's nice to receive constructive criticism, but when someone writes that you're ulgy, stupid, or pseudo just to hurt you... Well, it makes you wonder whether that person has nothing to better do with her time. But the more famous your blog becomes, the more comments of that sort you will get. I feel sad for everyone who knows nothing better to do than abuse other people anonymously. They seem to think that we, the addressees, are doing more with those comments than just showing them around, see who's gotten the most absurd, and delete it forever.

And have you ever made money through your blog? If yes, how so?

Indireclty. I once received a rather large donation from a reader who'd been reading me for several years and felt like giving me something. People can flattr my blog, but the money made there isn't exactly much, as we all know.

Do you use twitter, too? Why (not)? What pros and cons do you see when it comes to twitter?

Yes, I do, but very sporadically only.

Which other female bloggers can you recommend? Why?

I can recommend Smilla Dankert's http://anders-anziehen.blogspot.com a lot, I think you've introduced her here previously. [Yupp, here!] Other than that, I like to read Lisa Rank's blog (http://mevme.com).

Welche(n) anderen frauengeführten Blogs kannst Du empfehlen? Warum?
