Eva Ricarda Lautsch of Stadtpiratin

With her blog Stadtpiratin, Eva Ricarda Lautsch has also made it onto the list of nominees for the Mädchenmannschaft's Female Blogger of the Year awards - congratulations! To vote for your personal favorite before 31 January, click on the little drawing to the right ->

With a powerful mix of political, feminist and web issues, the 20 year old managed to gather a faithful readership around her writing. Now if you like, follow the jump to find out more about her blog for "independent people of all sexes"...

What's your name, how old are you, and what do you do for a living (or all day, for that matter)?

I am Eva Ricarda Lautsch, 20 years old, law student. So much for parameters.

How long have you been blogging? How did you get around to blogging?

I've had my site since 2009. I am interested in most anything and have been writing about that all my life. When I started to expand my Internet consumption to blogs a couple of years ago, I discovered the format for me: A digital living room with feminism, fashion, politics, word art and pop culture.

What's your blog called and why?

stadtpiratin.blogspot.com [something like "female city pirate".blogspot.com] – in the broadest sense, this is a description of myself and my topics. My articles are inspired by digital, but also urban surroundings, and my blog represents something like a cross section of my touring through them. Spiced up with personal analysis.

What are you blogging about? Why?

I blog on politics, feminism, and pop culture. Mostly because I want to get people thinking. Also, I want to provide women and others with an alternative to current fashion magazines. I wouldn't want to assume most readers are interested in beauty products and diets. Ideally, my musings should inspire.

Who's your target audience?

Independent women and interested men, no less independent. If I could choose, I'd like that regardless of their age and level of education.

Who designed your blog? How much was that? In case you designed your own layout: Where did you learn how to?

I designed it myself and back then a friend helped with its technical realization. My knowledge of HTML is growing whenever I talk to fellow bloggers and other web affine people. It's far from complete.

Which software and which host do you use? Can you recommend them?

I've been using Google's Blogger, but have been working with Wordpress for other projects. In retrospect, I prefer that.  Wordpress offers a more detailed user interface. Frankly speaking one that is aiding my limited knowledge of HTML.

What role play photos, MP3-files or video clips on your blog? If you use them, would you mind showing us one?

Photos play an important role on my blog. I take them myself and thus produce my own graphic material.  I like to embed videos, too, especially since I started adding a soundtrack to each blog post that's supposed to bring across a certain mood or is somehow otherwise related to my writing.

How many readers do you have? How many would you like to have? Does their number matter to you at all?

Numbers vary between 50 and 150 visitors a day, depending on when I published last. In the beginning, gaining many readers every day was a huge motivation. In the long run, though, I started posting less. This is due to the nature of my posts, I rarely only post imagery or video clips, and also because I go to university and work on other projects. However, thanks to RSS feeds and similar stuff my readers return even when a couple of weeks lie in between two posts. Generally I find content to be more important than numbers.

Can you learn how to blog? Do you need to know a lot about computers? Do you have any advice for beginners?

Learning how to blog is pretty easy, you don't have to know much about computers at all. More important are good ideas, writing well and being passionate about it.

Have you made negative experiences with blogging, too? What kind?

Sure, for example I get plenty of sexist comments. Interestingly enough I also used to have an obstinate female commentator who wanted all men liquidated. What happens a lot is that some people think I should meet them for coffee just because they liked a text. All in all, nothing major has happened so far though.

And have you ever made money through your blog? If yes, how so?

No, I haven't really cared about that much. Wouldn't want to rule it out for the future, though.

Do you use twitter, too? Why (not)? What pros and cons do you see when it comes to twitter?

Yes, my account is @eva_ricarda. I've got it mainly for Twitter's unkitschy poetry of 140 characters. And of course to get hold of and re-distribute information quickly. Disadvantages? High distraction potential.

Which other female bloggers can you recommend? Why?

Veronika Christine Dräxler of selbstdarstellungssucht.de for her master plan. Mary Scherpe of stilinberlin.com for her superb streetstyle photography (and her fairly recent At Home series). Anne Feldkamp of blicablica.blogspot.com for her distinct view on the fashion industry. Antje Schrupp's  antjeschrupp.com for her interesting and different point of view on gender topics. Teresa Bücker's flannelapparel.blogspot.com is fantastic, too, because her posts on fashion, feminism and art are diverse and well written.

Nachteile? Höchstens das Ablenkungspotential.

Welche(n) anderen frauengeführten Blogs kannst Du empfehlen? Warum?
