Liz of Ein Buch Muss die Axt Sein

After what feels like f-o-r-e-v-e-r, I am pleased to introduce to you today Liz and her beautiful literary blog Ein Buch muss die Axt sein.

Follow the jump to find out what Liz does for a living, why she's fed up with the German feuilleton, and what good advice she has for fellow female bloggers...

What's your name, how old are you, and what do you do for a living (or all day, for that matter)?

My name is Liz, I'm 32 and work in advertising. In ad-lingo, I'd be a "Freelance Senior Copywriter", which I think sounds dumb. Most of the time, I write and produce for money. That's why my blog is an important and beloved escape.

How long have you been blogging? How did you get around to blogging?

The "axe" is my first and only blog and has turned two on 13 February 2011. I founded it because I have been fed up with the German literary feuilleton. Books are staple food to me, I studied literature even, but most of what the usual editors write sounds overly intellectual and aloof. Who would want to pick up a book after reading their reviews?

I'd much rather write about books in an understandable, subjective and entertaining way. I aim at passing on my love for words to my readers. I'm not striving for intellectual perfection.

What's your blog called and why?

My blog is called "A book must be the axe" ["Ein Buch muss die Axt sein"]. That's the short version of a quote by Kafka: A book must be the axe for the frozen sea inside us. That is exactly how I feel about literature. A good book, or better, the right book at the right time can change your life. I'm absolutely convinced about that.

What are you blogging about? Why?

Surprise, surprise: I blog about reading. About fantastic books and terrible books, about magazines, about my thoughts and feelings, about things I see and experience, like readings or bookstores also. From time to time, I write ironical comments. The main thing is it has to do with reading.

Who's your target audience?

Anyone. Book lovers probably make up my core readership,  but I've also received comments previously from people who are just looking for some advice on which book to take on holiday. Whenever that happens, I feel very flattered. People obviously feel lie my taste is trustworthy.

Who designed your blog? How much was that? In case you designed your own layout: Where did you learn how to?

Whatever there was to design on my blog, I did myself. I knew a few things about layouting from my job. When I need help with anything, I'll just ask someone. That's worked well for me so far.

Which software and which host do you use? Can you recommend them?

The whole thing runs on Blogspot. You can't go wrong there. My professional profile is hosted with Wordpress, though. There I appreciate the added technical possibilities. Blogspot gives you more layouting functions in return. Ultimately, it's probably all the same. The restrictions the services put in place limit you somewhat, but for beginners I think it's fine to just be able to start a blog easily.

What role play photos, MP3-files or video clips on your blog? If you use them, would you mind showing us one?

Sometimes, I take my own photos of book covers. It just looks nicer than using the ones provided by the publisher. I have also previously posted photos of book stacks or myself reading. As literary blogs tend to be very text-heavy, I make a regular effort loosen things up a bit by posting images. I'm a very visual person. I include movie scenes or trailers when a book has been made into a film. Every now and then I even posts songs that I think would make a good soundtrack to a story.

How many readers do you have? How many would you like to have? Does their number matter to you at all?

Google Analytics claims I get around 3.000 visits a month. But I think those who read the "axe" in their RSS readers aren't counted there. So I'm not really sure.

When I started blogging, my goal was to introduce people to new authors. I wanted to convince people about books that had earlier on convinced me. Fantastically, this has worked many times so far. I'm always happy like an eel when I receive that kind of feedback.

Can you learn how to blog? Do you need to know a lot about computers? Do you have any advice for beginners?

Yes, and no, and nes. I have learned a lot since I started blogging. My writing improved, because I am very harsh with myself sometimes. I hate some of my older articles, but I leave them online nevertheless. You develop as a person and, of course, you learn. There's nothing much you have to know about computers, though. The large blogging platforms explain everything you need to know step by step. More advanced knowledge comes over time.

Whether I have advice? Uhm. I would advise you not to take anything personal. There are always people who like to insult others anonymously. Also very important: Don't feel pressured to perform! Us women tend to feel like we have to outperform ourselves all the time. That's dangerous, since it can kill the fun of blogging

Have you made negative experiences with blogging, too? What kind?

I have never made negative experiences. There were a couple of impertinent comments, but generally I have very nice readers.

And have you ever made money through your blog? If yes, how so?

No, and I don't intend to. I want maximal freedom. That's why I never request reading material from publishers, either. I don't want to be bound to any rules. I write for money in my day job, and I'd like to keep work and leisure activities seperate.

Do you use twitter, too? Why (not)? What pros and cons do you see when it comes to twitter?

I thought about setting up a Twitter account for the "axe" once. But somehow I didn't feel it fit my issues. So few characters... Nah, thanks. Plus I'd probably be way too inattentive to tweet regularly. I think there's too much input coming from the outside world already.

Which other female bloggers can you recommend? Why?

I love inFemme. She writes on everything: the world, the women, strange stuff, having kids, letters to the editor, and whatnot else. And because inFemme is so great, she was guest blogger with Missy online. Well deserved! http://infemme.twoday.net

Rosine is another little jewel that I stumbled upon. She blogs about beautiful things, important insights and has a very unique style of writing. More people should read her, it's fun: http://zibebe.blogspot.com/

Kathrin of drüberleben should be known to many readers by now. She was recently voted female blogger of the year by the German maedchenmannschaft.net. [Read her GCB interview here.] But since she writes about crappy stuff like depression so beautifully, and because I like her openness and think it's consequent and right, I'd like to recommend her blog as well: http://drueberleben.wordpress.com/

Kann man also quasi gar nichts falsch machen.

So wenige Zeichen...nee.

Welche(n) anderen frauengeführten Blogs kannst Du empfehlen? Warum?
